Postkarten, Map, Cologne

I was in Cologne a few weeks ago for business visiting the Fotokina show. I reserved a day to walk around the city and found some great stores.

Still, paper map is better for me, Cologne Germany

Excited with my new iPhone, I planned my market research all on the phone's Map application. Turned out I ran out of battery during the walk and went back to using a free map to navigate. Well iPhone's Map application is a great tool, I planned to rely on it for dozens of places I went, but the battery failed me. Further, using a map and a notebook to pre-plan locations is much more real and comfortable, tactile.

Postkarten, Cologne Germany

One of the stores I went was filled with surprises. Postkarten on Breite Str. has a nice mix of gifts, toys, books and postcards. I thought ground floor was a place of discovery but when I went upstairs to the postcard section, I was intrigued (too bad I didn't take pictures). Thousands of postcards old and new, classified into sections, filed into wooden boxes just like library index cards. The charm there can easily turn you into a postcard freak. Never regret to dig deep on the net before I go to any city.

That store looks like heaven. And I agree about the old fashioned map - the only thing I wish it has is, "You are here." :)

snow, was in Germany's Cologne yes, a few weeks ago.

Ann, I rated it 7 out of 10. Japan hosts most of the top rated stationery stores IMHO.

Patrick, I was thinking that when you have the time, maybe you can do a guide on which stationery stores to visit in Japan (easier if it's all in Tokyo). I'm saving up money to go there one day with my husband, who loves everything Japanese.

Ann, you will be amazed! My Japanese stationery of lifestyle store list is like a treasure box. Every time I go to Tokyo, I found new stores, places to explore and people to meet. You will need a full week to enjoy everything. Anyhow, I would love to compile a list in a great Scription PDF file coz it is again a treasure box in Tokyo alone, but since I'm not doing that any time soon, just email me when you are planning a real trip, I will give you a list of stuffs. Man, life is so short.

*LOL* Will do, Patrick. That won't be till for a few years though. Everything is pricey in Japan, but dear God I love that place!

what a charming little shop! i work on a project that involves postcards (it's called postcrossing) and would certainly get lost in there!
