I was in Cologne a few weeks ago for business visiting the Fotokina show. I reserved a day to walk around the city and found some great stores.
Excited with my new iPhone, I planned my market research all on the phone's Map application. Turned out I ran out of battery during the walk and went back to using a free map to navigate. Well iPhone's Map application is a great tool, I planned to rely on it for dozens of places I went, but the battery failed me. Further, using a map and a notebook to pre-plan locations is much more real and comfortable, tactile.
One of the stores I went was filled with surprises.
Postkarten on Breite Str. has a nice mix of gifts, toys, books and postcards. I thought ground floor was a place of discovery but when I went upstairs to the postcard section, I was intrigued (too bad I didn't take pictures). Thousands of postcards old and new, classified into sections, filed into wooden boxes just like library index cards. The charm there can easily turn you into a postcard freak. Never regret to dig deep on the net before I go to any city.
