Norwegian Wood - disappointed

I really don't understand why this book sold 4.4 million copies in Japan. I like Murakami's more distorted/ out of this world novels much much more. This seems like a simple love story to me and never stoke a chord. I don't think Murakami is particularly proud of this work at all, it will be very interesting to see him writing another unreal/darker/deeper novel covering the journeys of these same characters behind the rather simple love/sex story . Yes, lots of symbols were used again and again but they served no purpose in this very book IMHO.

Which particular point in the novel moved you? Or is it the total package? Can anybody enlighten me coz I just didn't get it.

My next read: Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis.

for me it was just the entire story. i loved that it was so amazingly simple. i love that he can just tell a story like this. i love how he can make words beautiful for the sake of these two lovers (and the third in the girl he finds in the end). i still get chills thinking about poor naoko.
